The next useful local AI stack is not “one model to do everything.”

It is a boundary layer.

The system has to know:

  • what should stay local
  • what can go to a stronger cloud agent
  • what needs browser or command-line verification
  • what is too risky to run without approval
  • what context crossed the boundary

That is the product.

The model matters, but the routing decision matters more than people want to admit.

A local model is useful when it can sit near private files, summarize machine state, handle small jobs, and decide whether a task is safe enough to keep close.

A cloud model is useful when the work needs more reasoning headroom, a bigger context window, or a harder code review.

Browser automation is useful when the answer has to survive contact with the real UI.

Persistent goals are useful when the agent should stop asking you to restate the same intent every turn.

None of those pieces need to win the whole workflow.

They need to own a boundary.

That is the difference between a pile of tools and a system:

  1. small/private tasks stay local
  2. complex repo work goes to stronger agents
  3. browser checks verify reality
  4. goals preserve intent across turns
  5. logs explain what crossed each line

The interesting question is not “local or cloud?”

The interesting question is: which task is allowed to cross which boundary, and can the user see why?

If the system cannot answer that, the stack is still mostly vibes.

If it can, the model choice becomes less fragile.

The boundary layer is where local AI turns from ideology into infrastructure.
